LABEL MAKER Documentation

Introduction
The LABEL MAKER program from RUBICON SOFTWARE will
allow you to generate graphics or regular print labels
(graphics with an Epson (tm) or Epson compatible
printer), and also complete directory listings of your
3-1/2" disks. It is completely mouse/menu driven with
little need for use of the keyboard (One exception is
to enter a new disk volume name - sorry you do have to
type it, reading minds isn't here yet!). The program
takes complete advantage of GEM (tm of DRI) and The
Operating System (TOS). It will function with either a
Color or Monochrome monitor in Medium or High
Resolution. (It will start in Low Resolution on the
color monitor, but the screen will not look correct.)
MENU Items
When you first start the LABEL MAKER, it creates a new
set of menu items for the program to use. Along with
the ever present Desk you will see five additional
items (Files/Fonts/Printer/Disk Name/Formats). We will
now go through the items one at a time.
DESK
If you select this, along with the normal accessories
you may have loaded, you will see an additional item
called About Label Maker. Selecting this item by
double clicking (TWO QUICK clicks of the left mouse
button) will produce the following screen. To exit
this just point at the 'OK' button at the bottom.
FILES
Selecting this will present you with two options, New
Disk or Quit.
New Disk
If you double click on this, you will be prompted
for the disk drive to use (A, B or C), and the
directory for the appropriate drive will be read
and displayed in the windows on the screen.
Quit
Selecting this will prompt you to determine if
you really do want to quit. To do so just click
on Yes.
======================================================
FONTS
Selecting this menu item will give you three choices
(Normal/Italics/Bold).
Normal
Normal is just what it says, normal text style on
the screen and on the label.
Italics
Italicized print on the screen and in the
graphics mode of print.
Bold
Bold print in the graphics mode. This can be
combined with both normal and italicized print.
PRINTER
This selection allows you to tell the LABEL MAKER how
you want the labels/directory to be printed. Four
selections are possible, (Graphics Print/Regular
Print/Align Printer/Directory Print).
Graphics Print
If you have an Epson (tm) or Epson compatible
GRAPHICS printer, this is the mode of choice. It
will allow the full function of LABEL MAKER to be
shown. The actual label you see on the screen is
what will be printed on the label.
Regular Print
If you don't have an Epson or compatible GRAPHICS
printer, or you don't want the graphics, this
mode will use the normal print capabilities to
produce fully useable labels.
Align Printer
This selection helps you to align the labels in
the printer. It is most useful with the graphics
mode of print. The best suggestion is to use this
with normal 80 column paper and then produce a
graphics label on the same sheet so you have a
reference for use when loading your labels. After
a few uses of this program with the labels, you
will find yourself quickly aligning and printing
great looking labels. It took me two to three
times before I discovered what needed to be done
and I WROTE THE PROGRAM!!! Don't get discouraged,
it does align correctly.
Directory Print
Instead of producing a label, this option
requires 80 column paper (or greater) to print a
complete directory of your disk. It will show the
file type (File or Folder), file name, size, date
created and time created. (As seen in the bottom
window on the screen).
DISK NAME
This selection allows you to Change the Volume
Name on the disk. When you format a disk you have
the option of providing a VOLUME NAME. Many
people have not used this feature or have generic
names on their disks. This function allows you to
put a different name on the LABEL ONLY... IT
DOES NOT WRITE A NEW VOLUME NAME ON THE DISK!!!!
Change Name
When you select this item it provides you with a
line and a cursor on the screen to enter the NEW
volume name to be shown on the label. You can
select this more than once in case you decide the
name you have given isn't the one you want to
use.
FORMATS
Selecting this will allow you to Sort Names and Change
the graphics border on the label.
Sort Names
You will notice there are actually three windows
on the screen, the label area, a file name area
to the right, and a directory area at the bottom.
The Sort Names function only works on the file
name window. When selected, it will sort the
names in ascending sequence. A second time and it
will return the names to the sequence found on
the disk. A third time will sort once more BUT
ERASE THE LABEL area if it was built. If you
decide you want to select the file names in a
different sequence, this is the easiest way
without selecting the New Disk menu item again.
Change Border
This option allows you to select one of
approximately 30 border types available for
GRAPHICS printing. As you click on this option
the label will be re-drawn using then next border
type. Continuing to select this will bring you
back to the start once more since it is a
rotating process.
HOW TO BUILD THE LABEL
The screen, as mentioned earlier has THREE windows,
TWO of which you can scroll through, THE FILE NAME on
the right, and THE DIRECTORY at the bottom. Names of
files NOT SELECTED for the label are in the normal
text mode. Those names selected are in LIGHT text
mode. To move a file name from the FILE NAME window TO
THE LABEL, point at the name and click the left mouse
button once. You will see the name lighten in the
right window, and appear in the label. To remove the
name from the label, click on the lightened name and
the reverse action takes place. The name is removed
from the label and becomes dark in the file name area.
HOW TO SCROLL
To scroll through the file name window or the
directory window, just point at the top or bottom
border of the appropriate window and click once. This
will cause the next or previous group of names to
appear in the selected window. You cannot go back
beyond the first file name, or forward beyond the last
file name. Scrolling in either of these windows has no
effect on the label window.
HOW TO STOP GRAPHICS PRINTING
If you determine that the graphics label you are
printing is incorrect, or you just want to stop, Press
AND Hold the Alternate key (left of the SPACE BAR),
and press the Help key once. This will stop sending
information to the printer. The printer may continue
to print for a short period of time if it happens to
have a built in buffer, or if you have installed a
print buffer on the ST computer. It is sometime wisest
to just let the label continue until complete!
